Earthing and Lightning

• Power system performance is influenced by the presence of storms and lightning.
• South Africa has an extraordinarily high level of annual lightning.
• Lightning disturbances are usually a significant issue for transmission lines up to the highest voltages.
• The lightning strike injects a current into the power system when it hits a transmission line and an overvoltage' will result.
• Insufficient insulation compensation for storms and lightning will introduce power system failures and permanent interruptions that will in turn, negatively impact production and productivity.
• Every OHL exposed to lightning shall adopt efficient means for diverting the electrical surges due to lightning to the general earth.

Mokco will assist industries establish a power system lightning performance management program in which the risk must be managed in zones which requires discrete management of earth electrodes and maintaining appropriate profiles of earth resistance in the context of the applied insulation coordination.
